Charging networks in Spain, compared
Spain has no single dominant charging operator, and the price you pay for the same electricity depends more on how you are paying than on which charger you plug into. This explains how sessions are billed, and how to work out what a network will actually cost you.
No prices are quoted on this page yet. Charging tariffs in Spain change often and differ by charger speed, subscription status and time of day — so rather than publish figures that would be wrong within weeks, this page explains the billing mechanics, which do not change.

How a charging session is actually priced
Understanding this is worth more than any price table, because it tells you which number to look for and why two people can pay very differently at the same socket.
A session is built from up to three components:

The bulk of it
A per-kWh rate
What you pay for the energy. Varies by operator, by charger speed — DC costs more than AC on the same network — and increasingly by time of day.

Some networks add a fixed amount per session. On a full charge this barely registers; on a short top-up it can dominate the cost. This is why a ten-minute splash of charge sometimes feels absurdly expensive.

Idle fees
A per-minute charge once the car is full or after a set period. Common on busy DC sites, reasonable in purpose — they keep chargers free — and easy to forget about over lunch.
The roaming markup: the real trap
This is the part that genuinely catches people out, and it is not well signposted anywhere.
Charge with operator A's card on operator B's charger, and A is effectively buying that session from B and reselling it to you. The markup for that is commonly in the region of 20–30% over what B's own customers pay — and it is rarely shown clearly before you start.

The practical rule: if most of your public charging happens on one network, subscribe to that one. If it is spread across several, contactless where available usually beats holding a card you rarely use.
The main operators
Four names cover most of what you will actually plug into in Spain. They are listed alphabetically by nothing in particular — this is not a ranking, and no operator has paid to be here or could.
Iberdrola
The largest network in Spain by number of points, with a mix of urban AC and motorway DC. Its own app gives the best rates on its own chargers.

- Worth knowing: Rates on its network are noticeably better as a subscriber than ad hoc.

Focused on high-power DC charging, largely on inter-urban routes and at service areas rather than in city centres.

Endesa X
Broad national coverage across both AC and DC, with a particularly strong presence in Catalonia and the south.

Powerdot
Sites chargers at retail parks, supermarkets and restaurants rather than on the open road.
- Strength: You charge while doing something else, which suits the way most people actually shop.

Alongside these are regional operators, municipal chargers, and hotel or restaurant points that may or may not be open to non-customers. Assume nothing about that last category without checking.
The cost hierarchy
Without quoting figures that would date, the ordering is stable and is what actually matters for budgeting:
- Home charging is by far the cheapest, especially on an off-peak tariff. Nothing else comes close.
- Public AC sits well above home but below fast charging.
- DC fast charging is expensive, and motorway ultra-fast is the most expensive electricity you will buy in Spain.
The gap between the top and bottom of that list is large — often a multiple, not a percentage. For long journeys the premium is a fair trade for time. For daily driving it rarely is, which is why the home charger guide is the most financially consequential page in this section.
How to compare networks for yourself
Tariff pages are the authority, and they change. What does not change is the method:
- Check the rate for the speed you will actually use. A network's headline AC price tells you nothing about its DC price.
- Look for the session fee, and mentally divide it by the kWh you typically take. On short top-ups it can double the effective rate.
- Find the idle policy — grace period and per-minute rate.
- Compare subscriber against ad-hoc rates and work out the break-even in kWh per month.
- Check whether contactless is supported on the chargers you would use. It sidesteps the whole account question.
- Ignore coverage claims and check a live map for the routes you actually drive.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a separate app or card for every charging network?
In practice you will end up with several. Most operators want you to use their own app or RFID card, and although roaming agreements mean one card often works on another network, you usually pay a markup for that convenience. Contactless bank card payment is becoming more common on newer fast chargers and is the simplest option when it is available — no app, no account, no roaming markup.
Why does the same charger cost different amounts for different people?
Because the price depends on how you are paying, not only on the charger. An operator typically has an ad-hoc rate for anyone who turns up, a lower rate for its own subscribers, and a different rate again for someone roaming in on another provider's card. Add time-of-day pricing on some networks and the same socket can produce three or four different prices in a day.
What is a roaming markup?
When you charge on operator B's charger using operator A's card or app, A is buying that session from B and reselling it to you. The markup covers that, and it is commonly in the region of 20–30% over what B's own customers pay. It is rarely displayed clearly before you start charging, which is why people are surprised by the final amount. If you regularly charge on one network, subscribing to that network usually pays for itself.
What are idle fees and how do I avoid them?
A per-minute charge that starts once your car is full, or after a set time. They exist to stop finished cars occupying a scarce fast charger, which is reasonable — but they are easy to forget about over lunch. Avoid them by setting a reminder for when your session should finish, and by checking the operator's terms: the grace period and the rate vary, and some networks do not charge them at all.
Is a subscription worth it?
It depends entirely on where you charge. If most of your public charging is on one network, a subscription usually pays for itself quickly through the lower per-kWh rate. If you charge irregularly across several networks, a monthly fee for a card you rarely use is poor value, and contactless payment where available is often both simpler and no worse. How do these prices compare with charging at home?
Home charging is dramatically cheaper — commonly a fraction of the cost of motorway DC.
